Coaching is receiving a lot of attention these days as people seem to place great importance to the concept of self-actualization and of becoming the best versions of themselves. The purpose of the coaching is to facilitate psychological and emotional growth to help people move forward from their present situations. Coaches guides their mentees in a journey of self-exploration and assist them in establishing new and more effective patterns of behavior and thinking. Coaches merely serve as a guide or advisor, and do not in any way spoon feed the mentee on what to do.

Although therapy and coaching share some key theoretical underpinnings, they are different in that the latter does not seek to resolve the underlying issues that contribute to the current problems of the client such as poor motivation. Also, coaching does not focus on examining nor diagnosing the past. These days, there are different types of coaches available, there are life coaches, career coaches, and leadership coaches.

A life coach will assist you in identifying and achieving your personal objectives. This area of coaching draws inspiration from several disciplines like sociology, positive adult development, and neuro-linguistic programming. Career coaches will help you in various career issues such as transitioning or changing careers, or identifying which career you'd most likely succeed in. In most cases, those who go to career coaches already have an idea of what they want out of the coaching sessions, but are not sure whether their plans will work. Leadership coaches on the other hand were traditionally sought by top level managers but are now also sought by average employees to guide them on how to develop professionally.

How to Find the Right Coach

Whether you're seeking guidance about personal development, career, or leadership issues, choosing the right coach is important. Obtain recommendations from family and friends or run a search online for coaches in your area. A number of them have established a presence online, thus, researching about their services and professional history relatively easy to do.

Determine if the coach you are contemplating on working with is licensed and is accredited by a local, regional, or national trade association. Fees can vary greatly among coaches and this is often contingent on their level of experience and credentials. Your goal is to find a coach that has years of experience but also prices his services reasonably. Remember to request for a preliminary consultation prior to making any commitments though so you can see if the coach's personality and coaching style is in sync with your personality. Coaching requires trust to be effective, if you're not comfortable with your coach, you won't be able to reach your goals.
