Many parents assume that they do not need to do anything to keep their baby's skin clean and healthy. For some reason they think that baby skin is tougher than adult skin. Maybe it is because they associate skin conditions with puberty (which babies, obviously, have yet to hit). The simple truth is that skin care should start from day one.

Baby skin is not nearly as tough as a grown-up's skin. Your baby needs your watchful eyes and care to make sure that skin conditions are stopped before they start. Thankfully, baby skin care is not all that complicated. You should be able to put together a quality routine early on in your baby's life. Here are some hints to help you out.

You have heard the term, "smoother than a babies bottom," however, babies are still vulnerable to developing rashes and other skin ailments. Sooner or later, you are going to have to confront the odd rash or cluster of bumps that your baby will be inflicted with, more often than not, it is something that will disappear after a simple treatment. What you do need to do is learn how to identify these "breakouts" and take the appropriate action so they no leave marks or turn into something more serious.

Remember: whenever you take your baby outside into a sunny day, he or she needs to wear a hat! You can never be too careful! When you buy your baby new clothes, bedding or toys make sure to wash them in hypoallergenic and gentle detergent before letting them come into contact with the baby's skin. Doing this helps cut down on the risk that the new clothes, toys or bedding will irritate your baby's skin. Many adults do this all of their lives. Don't you usually wash new cloth-based purchases before you wash or use them?

Don't be too cavalier with your baby's umbilical cord stump. Don't toy with it. Swab some rubbing alcohol on it a few times a day until it falls off. Don't mess with it any more than that. In fact, you don't want to bathe your baby in a bath until after the umbilical cord stump falls off. Your newborn's diaper should be folded down so that the top of it doesn't scrape or rub on the umbilical cord. The stump area is sensitive and is easy to infect which is why a high level of care is important.

Hats and umbrellas are also good at protecting your baby against sunlight. A cool, damp and soft cloth can be used to treat a sunburn that still manages to develop. Ensuring your baby keeps beautiful skin can be as simple as keeping it clean. That's right, it mostly all comes down to staying clean, that's the big secret.

Remember that you are caring for all of your baby's skin, not just the skin on his face. Keeping your son or daughter's skin clean and care depends on lots of little decisions you make all day long-but don't worry! Before you know it, you'll be taking care of your baby's skin without even thinking about it much at all! After a while the process will feel routine and you won't be thinking about it at all. It will be an automatic response!
