When traveling in Italy there are a lot of sites to see that are chalked full of art and history. The whole country is so beautiful that a person can just sit and take in their surroundings without even moving. The historical sites need to be viewed in person so the architectural genius that went into building them can be fully appreciated.

Because there are so many sites to see the following list contains some of the more popular venues that are open to the public. These include the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Borghese museum, the Vatican museum, the Palazzo Vecchio and the Roman coliseum. These structures are very popular so ordering tickets ahead of time is highly recommended to help avoid long waits in lines.

The Roman Coliseum was constructed between 70 and 82 AD and is located in the center of Rome. This venue provided entertainment for the whole city of Rome by hosting gladiator battles and other early versions of sports. The total seating for this complex is speculated to be around 87,000 seats but is in actuality only 50,000 seats which is very impressive for its time.

When in Vatican City the place to go is the Vatican Museums, housed within the museum are many works paintings along with treasures from Egypt and Rome. During a tour, a trip to the Sistine Chapel is included where priceless masterpieces created by famed painter Michelangelo are on display. In order to gain admission a ticket must be purchased and it is recommended that a person purchase one a few months in advance.

When in Florence a major attraction and historical site is the Palazzo Vecchio which was constructed to house the newly formed government of Florence. The structure was built in the later thirteenth and early fourteenth century, also the plaza that is resides on was named after the building. The name Palazzo Vecchio is translated into old palace and judging by its looks it is just that, a palace.

The Villa Borghese and the Borghese gardens are home to the Borghese Gallery which showcases numerous works of art from famed sculptor Gianlorenzo Bernini. Other floors offer paintings which are on display from famous artists such as Rubens and Raphael who were very influential during the Renaissance. The museum is truly one of a kind and should be visited if time permits during the trip, it is well worth the stop.

When visiting the town of Pisa a structure that has to be visited is the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This building is the youngest structure in the church courtyard and is by far one of the more popular ones. The building took quite awhile to build 177 years to be exact and was delayed many times due to unstable soil and wars.

The opportunity of traveling in Italy is a dream come true for most people and can be a trip to remember always. Make the best of the trip by taking in as many sites as possible and share the history with future generations. This country is so beautiful and has so much culture and history to offer that it is a destination that should be on every ones list.
