SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is a method of configuring website pages so they become visible and meaningful to Google, Yahoo! and Bing. Within the realm of search optimization tasks there are on-page functions and off-page functions.

On-page search engine optimization concerns itself with the technical aspects of page configuration and the proper use of keywords, meta data, and HTML features. Web page content is another important focus of on-page SEO, including document quality, web page authority, multi-media assets (i.e., images, video, podcasts, etc.), and internal linking.

Off-page SEO involves the various method available to "get found" by having your we pages back-linked in blogs, forums, directories, social media websites, such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, and social bookmark websites, like Delicious, Digg, and StumbleUpon. The major advantage of links from other sites is augmented even more when the text of the backlink - called anchor text - is highly relevant to your website.

The benefit of search optimization is that top ranked pages get the majority of the search engine visitors. Specifically, the top 3 natural page listings on a Google search engine results page (SERP) are believed to receive as much as sixty-two percent of all the traffic (SOURCE: Nobel Samurai), with the number one spot receiving an amazing forty-two percent of the traffic. This makes any one of the top 3 spots more valuable than any single pay-per-click position on the page.

SEM, or Search Engine Marketing, is website promotion that seeks to improve visibility through the use of paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion. SEM is generally an all encompassing term for various ways of promoting a website, including SEO. The most frequent use of the term is in conjunction with paid advertising, like Google's Adwords pay-per-click program.

SEO and SEM are critical to any business that needs to be discovered by local, national or international customers. When making important buying decisions, 89% of consumers use the Internet to do research before making offline purchases (Source: ComScore). If your business can't be found online, in the many different ways that people use search engines, your business is as good as invisible.

We exist in an ever increasing web-centric world where people have the ability to access the web from home, smart mobile devices, kiosks, cafes, even their vehicles. This means we have the extraordinary ability to interface with people where ever they happen to be. The difference between those who do connect and those who don't is SEO/SEM.

What's more, search marketing is replacing traditional outbound advertising methods, including television, radio, print and e-mail. The #1 reason that companies are abandoning outbound marketing is the cost and near complete rejection by consumers. Now a days, consumers have complete control over advertising and can virtually shut it out with caller ID, Tivo, and e-mail spam filters, to name just a few.

Search marketing is a fast moving mark. Changes to a web page that at one time would show up in a matter of days now take weeks. Generally speaking, anything you do to a web page today will take thirty to forty-five days to show a true effect in the search engines. Smart SEO specialists keep up to date log books of all changes made so they can look back to see which changes had good and bad effects.
